Info: People generally come up to me and ask me to criticize their artwork or stories. I give back strong criticisms with references and support my reasonings behind the criticism. My list of people who want me to criticize their work has miraculously increased since I've been on dA so I needed to make a journal to keep track.
Is there any little fact we should know about your critiquing? Well, yes. When I critique pictures, you'll (hopefully) understand what I'm saying fairly easily. The main critique that throws people off is locating which side. When I critique, I'm looking at the picture as if I were that creature, person, building, etc. So I generally say "her left hand", even though you're viewing it as the hand on the right side of the paper. This is to not only train your eyes, but to also make you realize and understand how the anatomy and structure of certain things work.
So if I mention something looks unnatural in a deviation, if possible, you should go to the mirror and try to mimic exactly what you drew the person doing. If it seems fine to you, you can either take my word or leave it - it's really your choice. But if the mimic is distorted and uncomfortable, then you would realize how it would feel on that character you drew and correct the mistake. That's all I'm really focusing on is to show that you can actually critique yourself and fix the problem before I see the picture.
So do you give redlining also or just written critiques? Yes, I give both redlining and written critiques - artist's choice. I do not give video recorded critiques mainly because I do not possess a video recorder and see no reason why someone would want a video recorded critique.
However, the artist who asks for a critique cannot receive a redlining and a written critique for one picture. That is too time consuming and I can get the message by with either method.
For those of you who don't know, redlining is when I take your picture (not claiming as my own) and draw red lines to show where you can improve. Don't worry, this does not ruin your picture (in your gallery). In fact, I'll be posting the redline in my gallery so that you get the feedback easily.
Do we have to choose which method of critiques we want? Would be helpful. You have a choice of getting a redline, getting a written critique, or giving me the option to choose one for you. If you chose the last option and didn't get a critique you wanted, too bad. I give you options and remember that I'm volunteering to do this - I do not get paid to help you improve.
Having me chose a method of critique for you may work like this: If you draw a picture with no color, I'll redline. If you draw with color, it could be either. If you just color, I'll write.
IF YOU DO NOT NOTE ME OF WHICH METHOD YOU WOULD LIKE, I WILL NOT CRITIQUE YOUR WORK. It's very simple and it doesn't bother me one way or another.
But what if I don't know which style of critique will work best for me? Then your name will go under the experimenting styles list and I'll be sure to let you experience both styles and see how you like them. Make sure to tell me in the end which method you prefer best when you figure it out.
Is there anything we should be aware of when posting up deviations for you to criticize? Yes, I do have certain things I look for before deciding to critique a deviation. If the picture states that it's a WIP or a sketch, or that the artist isn't that fond of the work, I will not pay any attention to it. Reason being that I have run into numerous deviations like this and they either come up with a completed version, a step-closer to completion, or never finish up the sketched picture and leave certain aspects, such as half a hand or face completed. It's not possible for me to critique on a half completed deviation nor is it any good critiquing a picture you'll be finishing shortly.
I like to critique a picture only once because I have trouble remembering what I've already mentioned from the WIP or sketch, and I don't have the time to browse around looking for it - nor do I like repeating what I critique. There's no point to it if I've told you once on that particular picture.
So what if we want critiques on a WIP just so that we can fix anything needed before we finish the deviation? I don't mind critiquing the WIP or sketch then, as long as the actual drawing is done and there aren't pieces missing. However, there's the consequence that I won't critique your picture again.
If I were to critique more than once on a picture, it may lose its value and the inspiration that started the picture before. I don't want a deviation to lose that just so the anatomy could be accurate. Pictures that have accurate anatomy and that look almost identical to something in real life are pretty, but they don't breath. They don't touch a person once they've been redone multiple times. It never works. The artist slowly loses its passion for the deviation and starts to only focus on the anatomy instead of the creativity. If you want great anatomy, than you must have equal, if not more, great creativity.
How do I get my art criticized? Just note me or get my attention in some way and I'll criticize the picture/story/etc. best I can.
How long does it take for you to criticize my work? I takes me a long time just because I go through each person's picture/etc. very thoroughly. I think criticisms should help a person understand what they're doing wrong with their artwork and be able to improve their skills. But to summarize how long, I'd have to say when my deviations list is low, about a week or less. When they're high, about a month. So if you want criticisms, please be patient with me.
Will you criticize every piece of my work? Because of lack on time and that this is voluntary, no. I just don't have that kind of time and I also have a real life. So, what I will be criticizing is what you put in your gallery. Anything that is moved or posted in Scraps will not be criticized unless I feel the need to. Reason being: I feel that if you feel your art doesn't deserve to be in the gallery, than it means that you either did the picture rather quickly and didn't take time into developing it or that you grew tired of it. For some people, I know this isn't true, but unless/until I have grown to know you better I'm going to have to assume this.
Also, if you post more than 10 pictures that I have not looked at, I will go through all the new pictures and select which ones to critique. So if I haven't checked my mail since August and it is now December and you've posted 54 pictures, I will most likely criticize the pictures that are the newest and that I feel the need to express myself upon. Also in small note, I do not let things go usually so bad as to have 54 pictures from one person in my mail.
What if I have a deviation that I really really want you to take a look at? Then drop me a note and I will take a look at it. You will have to send me the link to your deviation and may post up to five deviations. You may not send me a note of every new picture you've posted, nor may you post multiple notes containing five deviations from your gallery. If this is done, I will suspend criticisms from me on your deviations for two months. I personally have no problem with doing that because this is voluntary and I don't want to be used.
Can we see examples of your work? Sure, here's a few pictures I've criticized. You'll have to find my criticisms, but they should be easy to find. They're usually the very last comment (being first one you see) on the picture:

Just wanted to um... thank you for putting so much time into what you do. You'll never believe how helpful your crics are!
I'm honored that you used one of my pictures for your examples. I really, really appreciate your crits. they've helped me so much. Especially these past few months. You're really helping me to improve upon my human anatomy and such. And I myself am a critic, so I really appreciate what you do! You take so much time to really analyze the picture. It makes for a wonderful help!

To die is easy.
To live is the challenge.
Too bad I died long ago.
I just don't know how you can organize the ideas and notice every detail... it's too difficult for me..; ㅅ; even if i love a picture very much..' A'

Now you're thinking with Portals...♥
... also, my signature mark was running out of space and more people were requesting criticisms.
Yeah, time is what we all desire isn't it. Thankfully we're able to use the majority of it for things we want to do.
Just hang in there!!
"I admire your critiques.." Do you perhaps want me to crit your work as well?
' ㅅ' hmmm... that would be a very big honor!! ㅇ ㅅㅇ
but.. if you are very busy I don't want to bother you! ' A';

Indeed. It never seems like there's enough time. But as long as we use it to do what we want, it's time well spent, right?
